The MMA carnival heads to the the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday, for UFC 302. Dustin Poirier will enter the octagon for what could be the final time in a headline lightweight title fight against current champ Islam Makhachev.
Poirier has strongly suggested he'll enter retirement after Saturday's main even, with "The Diamond" aiming to become undisputed champion at the third -- and potentially final -- attempt.
Standing in his way is pound-for-pound UFC king Makhachev, who has reigned over the lightweight division since claiming the title by beating Charles Oliveira back in 2022, having made two successful defenses against Alexander Volkanovski last year.
The bill also boasts a pretty enticing support act, with Sean Strickland returning to the octagon for the first time since his middleweight title defeat to Dricus Du Plessis in January, with a comeback clash against Paulo Costa.

MMA Fighting has a live stream watch party for Saturday’s UFC 302 event, which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. In the main event, Islam Makhachev, the No 1. ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, defends his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier.
In the co-main event, former middleweight champion Sean Strickland returns for the first time since losing the title to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 297 as he faces one-time title challenger Paulo Costa in a five-rounder.
UFC 302 also features the middleweight return of Kevin Holland as he faces Michal Oleksiejczuk, as well as a pivotal bout in the heavyweight division between Jailton Almeida and Alexandr Romanov.
UFC is set to unveil a new glove designed in large part to stunt eye pokes that often render fighters unable to continue, the first major change of the protective equipment in more than a decade.
The global MMA leader made the impact-absorbing gloves mandatory, starting with Saturday’s UFC 302 card in New Jersey. UFC said the gloves should provide fighters with enhanced protection, improved fit, greater comfort and maximum flexibility.
Some notable changes include: all seams are now on the palm side of the hand just below the fingers, designed to minimize abrasions and cuts; new padding expected to make it easier for fighters to keep their fingers in a natural position and minimize eye pokes; and removal of finger binding intended to reduce bulk and minimize seams that may cause abrasions and cuts.
Duncan French, Senior Vice President, UFC Performance Institute, said the company’s research showed significant eye pokes happen once every 14 fights and delays last an average of about 50 seconds.
The 35-year-old Poirier, who made his UFC debut in 2011, said he didn’t expect much of an adjustment with the gloves ahead of his title fight against Islam Makhachev.
MMA gloves haven’t evolved much since the company’s inception. When UFC held its first event in November 1993, fighter Art Jimmerson competed with one bare hand and one boxing glove. UFC 14 in 1997 was the first event where the company made it mandatory to wear padded gloves.
Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, known as much for his controversial comments as he is for his championship fights, lambasted the makeover in a profanity-laced rant.
Makhachev is a multi-time Sambo gold medalist fighting out of Dagestan. He has not lost a fight since 2015, holding a thirteen-fight win streak with three wins via knockout and five via submission. He is getting trained for this contest by former champion Khabib Numagomedov, who beat Poirier in 2019.
Meanwhile, Makhachev looks to beat someone in his own division for the first time since October 22. His last two title defenses were against former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. The Russian is ready to return to a lightweight run where he took out a who’s who of fighters, including Dan Hooker, Bobby Green, and Charles Oliveira.
UFC Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley defended his crown against Chito Vera at UFC 299; at UFC 300, fans saw multiple five-star classics from Max Holloway’s iconic last-second knockout to Alex Pereira’s cold first-round knockout.
UFC is all set to start the summer party with the inaugural event, UFC 302. In the main event, Islam Makhachev will face former interim lightweight champion Dustin ‘Diamond’ Poirier. In the co-main event, Sean Strickland, former middleweight champion, will face middleweight contender Paulo Costa.
